Multiple Barn Burners at the Junction

Junction Motor Speedway brought in more cars on Saturday, and the results were multiple close races.
Many of the features involving Junction’s Nascar Whelen All-American Series classes were decided in the closing laps. Plus, JM Trucking put up an extra $500 to the winner of the Nascar b-mod feature.
Saturday brought in a special group of drivers and cars on Saturday. The Kansas Antique Racers came out and displayed some rare and unique vehicles that once dominated the world of dirt racing in the Midwest. Vintage sprint cars, midgets and super modifieds all came out and put on a few exhibition races for the fans.
With $500 on top of the usual payout, there was something extra to be motivated about in the Nascar b-mod division. The race was led by Herb Slough for the majority of the race, but this race was settled in the closing laps.
Slough and Zach Reicks were battling lap after lap, but the big moment came on a restart with less than five laps to go. Slough was the leader, Steve Swarthout was second and Reicks in third. As the top three went into turn three after taking the green flag, Reicks dove to the inside, got past Swarthout for second, but then he got tangled up with Slough, and they both spun around in turn four and caused a caution. The officials sent both of them to the rear of the pack. That put Swarthout up in front, and that was where Swarthout stayed for the final three laps of the race. Swarthout from Beatrice collected the extra $500 after a thrilling 18-lap feature. Ed Huxoll had his best b-mod feature finish after he crossed the line in third.
Seventeen Nascar late models were entered for competition on Saturday. Early on, Tyler Andreasen was in control of the lead. Andreasen led 15 of the 25 laps in the feature. He lost the lead with ten laps to go, when Cory Dumpert took over and never looked back. After a tough race the week before, Dumpert made the right adjustments to his number 77 car, and it paid off with another feature win. Andreasen crossed the line in second, his best finish of the season.
A record total 18 Nascar four-cylinders came to race. Early on, the pole sitter, Richard Crow, was out in front early. Crow had problems with finding speed the past few weeks, but on this night, he found just what he was looking for. Crow led most of the laps in the 12-lap feature. With less than five laps to go in the race, Dalton Siebke caught and passed Crow for the lead coming out of turn four. The 2011 track champion picked up another feature win in 2014. Crow got his best finish of the year with a second place effort. Steve Moock took third, Jordan Lawhorne fourth, and point leader Tyler Barribo rounded out the top five.
The Nascar modified division had a great 20-lap showdown. On the first lap, pole sitter Shane Stutzman got turned around. When the race got going, Kevin Betzen was out in front early. With about 12 laps to go, Andy Wilkinson made the pass on Betzen for the lead coming out of turn two.
Scott Smith and Kevin Larkins had tough as they both suffered from suspension damage on the left front side. Smith was able to finish the race. Larkins took a DNF.
Big point implications came when point leader Jacob Anson went down with problems. The 13J from Albion took the car behind the wall and did not return to the track.
As Wilkinson led, the “Osceola Rocket,” Dylan Smith was in hot pursuit. Smith started tenth on the grid, and he powered his way to the front. However, Smith came up one spot short of a victory. Wilkinson earned his second win of the year, and quite possibly, the point lead after the win and Anson’s DNF.
Dillon Thompson continued his undefeated streak in feature number one of two for the Nascar hobby stocks. Tom Meyers took second in the first feature, and David Dembowski rounded out the podium finishers.
Feature number two was a different story for Thompson. Thompson was in the lead coming to the white flag. Brandon Wergin was running in the second spot. Going through turns three and four, Thompson blew the right rear tire out while leading. Wergin made the easy pass off the final turn and ended Thompson’s undefeated streak at Junction Motor Speedway. Wergin used to run a four-cylinder at the Junction, but now he is holding his own in the hobby stock class.
